Planet of the Apes: Caesar's Warrior Collection 9-disc box set

Featuring all eight of the films released to date, this Caesar’s Warrior Collection box set kicks off with the original 1968 film, Planet of the Apes directed by Franklin J. Schaffner, which smashed contemporary box office records and remains one of the greatest sci-fi classics of all time. Based on the 1963 work of French novelist Pierre Boulle; La Planète des Singes, the film charts the progress of George Taylor (played by Charlton Heston) who crash-lands on an alien planet where primitive humans are ruled by apes. Taylor quickly goes from being a novelty to being persecuted, before discovering the true fate of humanity.

Subsequent films Beneath the Planet of the Apes (1970), Escape from the Planet of the Apes (1971), Conquest of the Planet of the Apes (1972) and Battle for the Planet of the Apes (1973) brought more mixed reviews. Whilst some are more harshly criticised than others, as a series they’re thought to have pushed the boundaries not just of narrative, but of makeup/visuals and special effects as well.

Tim Burton’s 2001 remake of the original film again broke new ground in terms of visual effects, featuring fearsome ape overlords that made their ’60/’70s counterparts look nothing short of comical. Nonetheless, many weren’t happy with the creative liberties taken by Burton, and generally the film is thought not to live up to the original.

Rupert Wyatt’s appointment to direct 2011’s Rise of the Planet of the Apes helped reinvigorate the franchise, and the recent release of Matt Reeves’s Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes has built on this success, proving a thoroughly action packed, emotionally intelligent and thought inspiring release.

New films mean new box sets, and this Caesar’s Warrior collection includes a moulded resin replica of Caesar’s head (Caesar is the central ape in the recent movies), complete with war paint, to help truly evolved fans distinguish themselves from lesser species. Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes is also offered on a ninth disc in 3D Blu-ray format (as well as standard) making this an unrivalled Planet of the Apes experience!

The release date hasn’t been confirmed by we get the feeling this will be out in time for it to be scribbled on movie buff’s Christmas ‘wish’ list.
